On December 16, 1985, Carol Drake, age 56, was found murdered alongside her employee, 39-year-old Terry Shimizu, in a Wahiawa adult bookstore in Honolulu, Hawaii. Both women had been stabbed to death, with Drake suffering a single fatal wound to the heart and Shimizu to the neck. There were no signs of forced entry or struggle, and the store appeared largely undisturbed, although some cash was missing. A bloody knife was recovered at the scene, but few other clues were found.
