On September 29, 2023, at approximately 2:20 a.m., North Wilkesboro Police Department officers and Wilkes County Emergency Medical Services responded to a call concerning an individual with unknown issues at 313 L Street in North Wilkesboro. Upon arrival, they discovered 32-year-old Leverne Evan Dupree Johnson lying on the ground outside the residence, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Emergency medical personnel provided immediate treatment before transporting him to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.
Despite medical efforts, Johnson remained in critical condition and succumbed to his injuries on October 10, 2023. Born on April 24, 1991, in Caldwell County, North Carolina, he was known for his athleticism and deep love for his family. He is survived by his spouse, parents, siblings, and extended family members.
As of December 2024, the North Wilkesboro Police Department continues to investigate Johnson's death. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The lack of progress has caused frustration among Johnson's family members, who are seeking justice and closure. His brother, Paul Johnson, expressed concerns about the absence of charges, stating, "It's really disheartening, and it's scary honestly, if someone can shoot someone, and kill them, and get away with it."
