On October 9, 2023, 30-year-old Jacklyn Marie Reed of Johnson City, Tennessee, was fatally shot at a McDonald's restaurant on Four Seasons Boulevard in Hendersonville, North Carolina. The incident began with an argument between Reed and another woman at a nearby bus stop. Seeking to distance herself, the other woman entered the McDonald's, but Reed followed her inside. A restaurant manager intervened, separating the two women and prompting Reed to leave.
However, Reed returned moments later and was confronted by the manager and a male employee, 35-year-old Sam Antwan Ivey. During this encounter, Reed reportedly reached out and touched Ivey, who then drew a concealed handgun and shot her once in the chest, resulting in her immediate death.
Following the shooting, Ivey fled the scene and proceeded to Edneyville Elementary School, where his child was enrolled. A vigilant school resource officer, aware of the situation and recognizing Ivey's connection to the school, apprehended him in the parking lot without incident. The school implemented a temporary secure lockdown as a precautionary measure. Authorities do not believe Ivey intended any harm at the school.
Ivey was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held without bond at the Henderson County Detention Facility. The investigation revealed that Reed had been in Hendersonville for several days prior to the incident, during which local police received multiple reports concerning her erratic behavior. Despite these interactions, officers did not perceive her as a danger to herself or others until the fatal encounter at McDonald's.
This tragic event marks the first homicide in Hendersonville in three years. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and additional charges against Ivey are anticipated. The community remains in shock as it grapples with the senseless act of violence that claimed Reed's life.
