On February 3, 2024, at approximately 8:30 p.m., deputies from the Tyrrell County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire near the intersection of South Road Street and Railroad Street in Columbia, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 25-year-old Keshawn Spruill lying on the ground with a gunshot wound. Spruill was immediately transported toward ECU Health Chowan Hospital; however, he succumbed to his injuries en route.
In the days following the incident, the Tyrrell County Sheriff's Office conducted interviews and pursued multiple leads. On February 7, 2024, their investigation led to the arrest of 21-year-old Yuri Spencer, who was charged with murder in connection with Spruill's death. Spencer was taken into custody and is currently held at the Dare County Detention Center without bond.
