On March 17, 2024, in Smithfield, North Carolina, 44-year-old Emily Christine Steinhoff was fatally shot during a custody exchange. She had accompanied her sister, Hillary, to retrieve Hillary's 14-month-old child from the child's father, Dorian Thomas. Upon their arrival at Thomas's residence, he initially refused to open the door and was observed recording the sisters through a window. After a period of knocking, Thomas opened the door and discharged a firearm, striking Steinhoff in the torso ...
