On March 19, 2024, 55-year-old Sureita Angelia Samuels was tragically shot and killed while sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot of a Walgreens in Huntersville, North Carolina. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and observed a man exiting Samuels' vehicle immediately afterward. The suspect then entered a black Dodge Ram truck and fled the scene.
The Huntersville Police Department quickly identified the suspect as 53-year-old Rahman Akbar Ferguson of Charlotte, North Carolina. Investigations revealed that Samuels and Ferguson were known to each other. Detectives tracked Ferguson's movements and discovered he was traveling north through Virginia.
With assistance from the Virginia State Police, authorities located Ferguson in Alexandria, Virginia. When officers attempted to stop his vehicle, Ferguson fled, leading to a pursuit. He eventually crashed the truck and attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended after a brief search. Ferguson was taken into custody and faced extradition to North Carolina to face charges, including murder and violation of a domestic violence protective order.
Samuels, originally from Jamaica, was survived by her husband, Brian, and two children, Alia and Marlon. Her funeral was held on March 30, 2024, at Raymer-Kepner Funeral Home in Huntersville, where family and friends gathered to honor her memory.
The tragic incident shocked the local community, highlighting the devastating impact of domestic violence. Authorities continued their investigation to uncover the full circumstances surrounding Samuels' death, urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
As the legal process proceeded, the community mourned the loss of a beloved wife, mother, and friend, reflecting on the need for increased awareness and prevention of domestic violence to prevent such tragedies in the future.
