The couple was last seen in the areas of Country Lane, Campbell Road, and Highway 601 in Mocksville. Gregory's white Ford truck, which he had been driving earlier that day, was also unaccounted for.
On May 31, 2024, around 11 a.m., the Iredell County Sheriff's Office received a report of two bodies found in a wooded area off Sheffield Road, just inside the Iredell County line. The deceased were identified as Cynthia and Gregory Gobble. Evidence at the scene, including the recovery of a firearm, indicated that Gregory had fatally shot Cynthia before taking his own life in an apparent murder-suicide. Investigators concluded that no other individuals were involved, and there was no ongoing threat to the public.
Court documents later revealed that Cynthia had filed for a legal separation from Gregory in late March 2024, citing allegations of isolation, volatility, and cyberstalking. She reported that Gregory had placed a tracking device on her car and made her feel trapped in the marriage. The court had granted her exclusive ownership of their shared home on Country Lane.
