On June 27, 2024, at approximately 5:01 p.m., deputies from the Catawba County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 5000 block of Hope Road in Vale, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 31-year-old Larry Ray Whisnant deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
The suspect, 30-year-old Trevor Kiernan O’Mara, was present at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a single gunshot and observed O’Mara shouting at deputies upon their arrival, admitting to the shooting. Neighbors indicated that Whisnant had been working on remodeling the home where the incident occurred.
O’Mara was subsequently charged with murder and booked into the Catawba County Jail without bond. Authorities have stated that an apparent altercation between Whisnant and O’Mara led to the shooting, though specific details regarding the motive remain undisclosed.
Larry Ray Whisnant, born on August 25, 1992, in Catawba County, was the son of Lori Icard and the late Richard “Rick” Whisnant. He is survived by his mother, brother Justin Robert Whisnant, grandmother Frankie Whisnant, and other family members. A celebration of his life was held on July 6, 2024, at Providence Baptist Church in Hickory, North Carolina.
