On July 1, 2024, Brent Matthew Simpson, a 47-year-old K-9 officer with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), tragically passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. near Steele Creek Road, close to the Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Officer Simpson was found in a wooded area and was promptly transported to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
