On the night of October 26, 2024, 29-year-old Davicia Annie Jean Lee was fatally shot at a Cook Out restaurant located in the 1500 block of South Miami Boulevard in Durham, North Carolina. Deputies from the Durham County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 10:30 p.m. and found Lee deceased at the scene.
Following an investigation, authorities arrested three individuals in connection with Lee's death.
On November 21, 2024, 23-year-old Alexander Kenyon Carlton Jr. and 18-year-old Calvin Jerade Spence Jr., both from Durham, were taken into custody. They were charged with first-degree murder, carrying a concealed gun, felony conspiracy, and going armed to the terror of the people. Both suspects are being held at the Durham County Detention Center without bond.
A third individual, 18-year-old Jamari Treyvon McKnight of Wake Forest, was also arrested in connection with the incident. McKnight faces misdemeanor charges, including carrying a concealed weapon, resisting a public officer, and going armed to the terror of the people. According to warrants, McKnight was observed with a firearm during the confrontation and resisted arrest when approached by law enforcement.
The investigation revealed that the fatal shooting occurred after a heated argument between Lee and the suspects. Court documents indicate that Carlton Jr. and Spence Jr. allegedly drew their firearms and shot Lee as she was walking away from the altercation. The Durham County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the case and has urged anyone with additional information to come forward.
Lee's death has deeply affected her family and the local community. Her father, David Lee, expressed profound grief over the loss of his daughter, describing her as "the most special person in the world" and lamenting her move to North Carolina for work, which ultimately led to the tragic incident.
