In the fall of 2010, a night of Halloween celebration in Atlanta turned into a scene of tragedy, forever altering the lives of one family. Rachel Jones, a 41-year-old African-American woman, was at a party on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway on the evening of Saturday, October 30th, just four days shy of her 41st birthday. What began as a festive gathering was shattered by the sound of gunfire.
More than 15 shots were fired from a vehicle outside, tearing through the venue in a seemingly random act of violence.
Inside, the initial sounds were mistaken by some as a Halloween prank. But the reality of the situation quickly became horrifically clear. Jones was struck in the face by a bullet and was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical condition. Three other people were also wounded in the drive-by shooting. Despite medical efforts, Rachel Jones succumbed to her injuries the following day, on October 31, 2010.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Atlanta police had very little to go on. Investigators canvassed the area for clues and spoke to witnesses, but a motive for the shooting remained elusive. Authorities were searching for a dark-colored, four-door vehicle, possibly an SUV, with dark-tinted windows that was seen at the scene. At the time of the initial reports, no suspects had been identified and no arrests had been made in connection with the murder of Rachel Jones, leaving her family and the community grappling with a senseless act of violence.
