In the late summer evening of August 2, 2023, a chaotic scene unfolded on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, New York, that would end in the tragic death of Daniel Johnston. The 32-year-old Shirley resident was driving his 2021 Chevrolet southbound in the northbound lanes when his vehicle veered off the road, striking a pole and a fence around 8 p.m. near Rugby Drive. First responders who arrived at the crash site made a grim discovery; Johnston had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
