In the late summer evening of August 2, 2023, a chaotic scene unfolded on William Floyd Parkway in Shirley, New York, that would end in the tragic death of Daniel Johnston. The 32-year-old Shirley resident was driving his 2021 Chevrolet southbound in the northbound lanes when his vehicle veered off the road, striking a pole and a fence around 8 p.m. near Rugby Drive.
First responders who arrived at the crash site made a grim discovery; Johnston had sustained a gunshot wound to his leg.
Johnston, a graduate of William Floyd High School who worked as a drywall finisher and painter, was rushed by Mastic Beach Ambulance to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The incident was quickly turned over to the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad for investigation.
Authorities have not yet publicly identified any suspects or disclosed a possible motive for the shooting that preceded the fatal crash.
