On a summer evening in Rochester, New York, 19-year-old Rukia Issack, known to her friends as 'Tricky,' was walking down a sidewalk in the Beechwood neighborhood with two teenage boys. The group was on Hazelwood Terrace near Denver Street when gunfire suddenly erupted, shattering the calm of the neighborhood. All three were struck by the hail of bullets and rushed to Strong Memorial Hospital.
While the two boys sustained injuries, with one in critical condition, Rukia Issack succumbed to her wounds and passed away on August 12, 2024.
The seemingly random act of violence sent shockwaves through the community, prompting an intense investigation by the Rochester Police Department. It was later revealed that the shooting may not have been random after all. Investigators determined that one of the teenage boys walking with Issack was the intended target of the shooters, and that she was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
Within days, authorities announced the arrests of two suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Nasezire Horton, 21, and Quentin Riviere were taken into custody following the execution of a search warrant at a suspected drug house on Edmond Street. During the raid, police discovered 150 vials of crack cocaine and a quantity of marijuana. Both men, who have prior felony convictions, were subsequently charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and drug possession.
Horton and Riviere were arraigned in court where they both entered pleas of not guilty to all charges. The community, still mourning the loss of a young life senselessly cut short, held a balloon release to honor the memory of Rukia Issack. Friends and family gathered to share their grief and remember a life that was tragically taken too soon. The case against Horton and Riviere is now proceeding through the legal system.
