In the quiet community of Saint-Charles, Missouri, the life of 15-year-old Lydia Satha Elking, a white/caucasian female, was tragically cut short on the evening of February 18, 2023. A sophomore at Liberty High School, Lydia was known for her radiant smile and a vibrant personality that brightened every room she entered. She was a passionate soccer player and a beloved daughter, sister, and friend, remembered for her fierce independence and eagerness to experience all the world had to offer.
That fateful evening, Lydia accompanied her 17-year-old boyfriend to a location near Oak Avenue and Perry Street. The purpose of their visit was for her boyfriend to sell marijuana to two individuals. The intended buyers were identified as Alex Mason and Trevon Gully. Upon their arrival, the situation took a dark turn as Mason and Gully attempted to rob the couple at gunpoint. In the struggle that ensued, a single shot was fired into the vehicle, striking Lydia in the chest. Her boyfriend rushed her to St. Joseph's Hospital, but her injuries proved fatal.
In the days that followed, law enforcement officials swiftly moved to apprehend the suspects. Alex Mason, who was 16 at the time, was located at a hotel in Florissant and taken into custody. Investigators discovered the firearm used in the shooting concealed in the attic of Mason's home, along with the clothing he wore during the crime. The second suspect, 17-year-old Trevon Gully, was found at a hospital receiving treatment for injuries he sustained during the incident. Both teenagers were initially charged in St. Charles County Family Court with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, and armed criminal action.
As the investigation progressed, it was determined that both Mason and Gully would be tried as adults. They both face charges of second-degree murder, first-degree attempted robbery, and armed criminal action. Further investigation also revealed that Lydia's boyfriend had a history of engaging in drug transactions in that same area and had previous dealings with the suspects. Consequently, on March 15, 2023, he was also arrested and charged with second-degree murder and two counts of distribution of a controlled substance near a school. His case is being handled in the juvenile court system. The untimely death of Lydia Elking sent shockwaves through her community, leaving her family and friends to mourn the profound loss of a bright and promising young life.
