Her death followed a brutal physical assault by fellow students at Central Regional High School, an incident that was filmed and circulated on social media, amplifying her humiliation. The tragic events sparked widespread outrage and a national conversation about bullying and the responsibilities of school officials.
Just two days before her death, on February 1, 2023, Adriana was walking down a school hallway with her boyfriend when she was attacked by a group of students. The assault, which lasted about 30 seconds before being broken up by school staff, was recorded by other students. In the video, Adriana was shown being repeatedly struck, and some students could be heard cheering in the background. Her father, Michael Kuch, stated that she was hit with a 20-ounce water bottle and suffered bruising and blacked out.
The video of the attack was subsequently posted on various social media platforms, including TikTok, where it was shared and commented on. According to her father, the online harassment continued after the physical assault, with one of the alleged attackers sending his daughter a message mocking her.
In the wake of Adriana's death, four female students from the high school were criminally charged. Due to their status as minors, their names have not been publicly released. One student was charged with aggravated assault, two were charged with conspiracy to commit aggravated assault, and a fourth was charged with harassment. One of the juveniles later faced an additional charge of conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. Michael Kuch revealed that one of the girls charged had been bullying his daughter online for years prior to the physical attack.
The school district and its administration faced intense scrutiny and criticism for their handling of the bullying incident. Adriana's father asserted that the school failed to take appropriate action by not immediately reporting the assault to the police. The school superintendent at the time, Triantafillos Parlapanides, resigned amid the controversy. His resignation followed public statements in which he disclosed personal information about Adriana and her family to the media. The Kuch family has since filed a lawsuit against the Central Regional School District, alleging that officials were aware of a pervasive bullying problem and failed to protect their daughter.
