In the South Ward of Newark, on the evening of September 15, 2024, the life of 49-year-old Keep Harris was tragically cut short. In the 400 block of S 11th Street, a burst of gunfire shattered the night, leaving Mr. Harris with fatal wounds. Police were called to the scene, where they discovered him suffering from the assault.
Despite the immediate response and efforts of emergency medical personnel who administered CPR before rushing him to University Hospital, Keep Harris succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival, leaving a community to grapple with the sudden violence.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has since taken the lead in the investigation into his death.
As investigators work to piece together the events of that night, the motive behind the shooting remains unknown. Authorities have not yet identified any suspects in connection with the homicide, and the individual or individuals responsible remain at large.
