The joyous outcome of a court hearing turned tragic in the front yard of his mother's home, cutting short a life filled with promise and a father's love.
Earlier that day, Alex Brown had been in court, fighting for and winning the right to have his children in his care.
He and his family were reportedly elated as they left the courthouse. Shortly after arriving at his mother and stepfather's residence in Louisa, the celebration was shattered by gunfire. According to family members, the initial shots were fired into the vehicle Alex had been riding in with several others. Moments later, he was chased down and killed. His mother recounted that her son's final act was one of heroism, as he drew the attacker's fire away from the car, saving her life in the process.
The suspect in the shooting was identified as 36-year-old David Branham, the boyfriend of Alex Brown's ex-wife. While the Louisa County Sheriff's Office indicated Branham was 'involved' in the custody dispute, Brown's mother clarified that he was not a direct party to the court proceedings. Following the incident, David Branham was arrested and taken into custody. He has been charged with murder and attempted malicious wounding, with the possibility of additional charges pending. Branham is being held without bond as the legal process moves forward. The community was left to mourn the loss of a devoted father who, in his final moments, was celebrating the very children he lived for.
