In the early hours of July 9, 2023, the life of 20-year-old Nyjeon Damerae Brandon, a Black male from Martinsville, Virginia, was tragically cut short. He was a passenger in a vehicle traveling along the 300 block of Commonwealth Boulevard West, in the vicinity of the Chopstix restaurant, when he was struck by gunfire. At approximately 2:25 a.m., private citizens brought Brandon to the Sovah Health emergency room in Martinsville with gunshot wounds.
Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after his arrival.
The investigation into the shooting unfolded over several months. Martinsville Police Chief Rob Fincher characterized the act not as a random event, but as a 'premeditated murder' and an 'outright execution,' stating that Brandon was the intended target. The case remained active, with investigators executing several search warrants and awaiting the results of evidence from the state lab. A significant development in the case came on February 18, 2025, when authorities arrested 23-year-old Jahil Arman Martin of Greensboro, North Carolina. The arrest was a collaborative effort between the Martinsville Police Department, the Greensboro Police Department, and the North Carolina Bureau of Criminal Investigations. Martin was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond pending extradition to Virginia. Law enforcement officials have indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and there is a possibility of further charges and additional arrests, suggesting others may have attempted to conceal evidence related to the crime.
