On August 9, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded in Smyth County, Virginia, resulting in the death of Deputy Sheriff Hunter Reedy, aged 27, from Marion, VA. The event began around 5 p.m. when a Marion police officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Route 16. The vehicle initially failed to stop but eventually halted near the intersection of Route 16 and Hatchery Drive. Deputies from the Smyth County Sheriff's Office, including Reedy, arrived to assist the Marion Police officers.
