In the winter of 2023, the life of 25-year-old Nakita Monet Baxter was tragically cut short in what authorities have described as a murder-suicide. On the night of January 4th, law enforcement responded to reports of gunshots at the Westwood Apartments in Manning, South Carolina.
Upon their arrival, officers were met with a distressing scene. After failing to make contact with anyone inside the apartment, the sound of a crying infant led them to force entry.
Inside, they discovered the bodies of Nakita Monet Baxter and 32-year-old Dezmond A. Mitchell. Nearby, a small child was found physically unharmed.
According to the Clarendon County Sheriff's Office, the investigation points towards a murder-suicide. Witnesses reported hearing a heated argument between a male and a female just before the fatal gunshots rang out. Investigators confirmed that Baxter and Mitchell were in a relationship and that Baxter had only recently moved into the apartment.
The preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that the incident was the result of a domestic dispute that escalated to a devastating conclusion. As the perpetrator is also deceased, there have been no arrests, and the case is not expected to proceed to a trial.
