On the night of February 2, 2023, the life of 21-year-old Lelanni Maria Durham, a Black/African American female, was tragically cut short in Manning, South Carolina. At approximately 11:15 p.m., a vehicle drove by a residence on Reardon Street and multiple shots were fired into the home. Durham, who was inside at the time, was struck by the gunfire.
She was rushed to McLeod Health Clarendon for medical attention but succumbed to her injuries shortly after midnight.
The Manning Police Department immediately began an investigation into the deadly drive-by shooting, seeking information from the public to help identify those responsible for the violent act that shook the community. The loss of the young woman prompted an outpouring of grief and support for her family, with many remembering her as a vibrant and beloved individual. Discussions arose within the community about the need to address gun violence to ensure the safety of its residents.
After weeks of investigation, a significant development occurred in the case. On March 22, 2023, authorities, with the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Sumter County Sheriff's Office, arrested Dyontae Jevon Gamble in connection with the fatal shooting. Gamble was subsequently charged with murder, assault and battery in the first degree, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and discharging a firearm into a dwelling. The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement continues to seek any additional information related to the incident.
