In the spring of 2023, the community of Bluffton, South Carolina, was unsettled by a string of violence that claimed the life of 32-year-old Shanelle Yvette Nimmons. A Black female, Nimmons became the second person to fall victim to a fatal shooting in Beaufort County in just a two-day span, a fact that underscored a concerning rise in gun-related deaths in the area.
On the afternoon of April 10th, the Bluffton Police Department received calls that led them to a gas station on Bluffton Parkway, where they found Nimmons.
The shooting itself had taken place minutes earlier on Taylor Court, where Nimmons and others were reportedly talking near their cars. From there, she was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, but she succumbed to her injuries later that evening. The motive behind the shooting remained unclear in the immediate aftermath, and authorities did not release any information regarding potential suspects.
In the days that followed, the investigation into her death continued, but no arrests were immediately made. The lack of suspects left a community on edge and a family grieving an unexpected and tragic loss. In the wake of her death, a fundraiser was established to assist her mother with the unforeseen funeral expenses. Funeral services were held approximately one week after her passing, allowing family and friends to gather and remember a life cut short by violence.
