A male, he was discovered unresponsive in the front yard of a residence on Cheyne Street around 11 p.m., prompting a call to the Sumter Police Department. When officers arrived, they found Wilson had been fatally shot.

George Gregory Anderson Sr., a 58-year-old neighbor of Wilson, was identified as the alleged perpetrator. A faithful member of the Beulah AME Church, he was active in the Lay Organization and the Sons of Allen/Men's Club.
