In a tragic turn of events stemming from a prior altercation, 21-year-old Brendon Armontae Nyquan Gray, a male resident of Swansea, lost his life on Monday, October 16, 2023. The fatal incident unfolded in the Little Mountain area of South Carolina, near Lake Murray, following a dispute that had begun the previous weekend.
The conflict between Gray and 20-year-old Nathan Thomas Caldwell of Little Mountain reportedly started with a physical fight on a Saturday night.
The animosity continued to simmer through social media exchanges, culminating in a confrontation at Caldwell's residence on Stevens Creek Road on Monday evening. Gray, along with a group of other individuals, arrived at Caldwell's home. According to statements Caldwell made to investigators, he retrieved his own firearm after allegedly seeing a gun in the possession of one of the individuals who had arrived.
Stepping outside his house, Caldwell discharged his weapon, striking Gray, who was the person closest to him. Authorities later confirmed that Gray himself was unarmed at the time of the shooting. Fatally wounded in the upper body, Gray was transported to a fire station in Newberry County, where he was pronounced dead. In the aftermath of the shooting, as the group that had accompanied Gray was leaving the scene, one individual reportedly fired a shot into Caldwell's residence.
Law enforcement officials quickly identified Nathan Thomas Caldwell as the primary suspect in Gray's death. He was arrested and is facing serious charges, including murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime. While a bond was set for the weapons charge, Caldwell was denied bond on the murder charge and remains incarcerated at the Lexington County Detention Center. The investigation into the shooting remains active, with authorities working to identify the other individuals present at the scene. Officials have indicated that further charges and arrests may be forthcoming as they continue to piece together the full scope of the incident.
