In the late evening hours of February 1, 2024, the life of 19-year-old Darius Hooks was tragically cut short. Residing in Goose Creek, South Carolina, the young Black man was at a home in the Delta Oaks Mobile Home Park on Appian Way in North Charleston when violence erupted. Around 10:42 p.m., deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office and officers with the North Charleston Police Department were dispatched to the scene following reports of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, law
enforcement discovered a grim scene with three individuals suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services transported all three victims to Trident Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Darius Hooks succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:21 p.m. An autopsy was subsequently scheduled at the Medical University of South Carolina to officially determine the cause of death. The other two victims were treated for their injuries, though their identities were not publicly disclosed.
For two months, the community and the family of Darius Hooks awaited answers as investigators worked to piece together the events of that fatal night. Their investigation culminated on April 3, 2024, with the arrest of 24-year-old Simeon Darius Boyd of Ridgeville. With the assistance of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Boyd was taken into custody and charged with murder. The following day, a judge denied bond for Boyd, and he was booked into the L.C. Knight Dorchester County Detention Center. While an arrest was made, authorities did not immediately release a motive for the shooting or detail the relationship between Boyd and Hooks as the investigation continued.
