In the early morning hours of June 1, 2016, Shahriar Zolfaghari, a 34-year-old man, was working as a Lyft driver in Atlanta, Georgia, to provide for his family. Originally from Tehran, Iran, he had moved to Atlanta after falling in love with his wife, Camila Wright, a Georgia assistant attorney general. He was a devoted husband and a loving father to their one-year-old daughter.
At approximately 1:15 a.m., a witness noticed Zolfaghari's car stopped at a green light at the intersection of
Rankin Street and Boulevard in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. Upon approaching the vehicle, the witness discovered that Zolfaghari had been shot. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically succumbed to his injuries during surgery. Investigators found that he had been shot twice. In the initial stages of the investigation, police believed the motive was not robbery, as Zolfaghari's wallet and credit cards were still in his possession. Evidence suggested that the perpetrator may have been inside the car with him at some point.
The case garnered significant media attention, partly due to Zolfaghari's marriage to a state prosecutor. A substantial reward was offered for information leading to an arrest. For years, the investigation continued with few public developments. A year after the shooting, police announced they had a 'short list' of persons of interest but did not release any names. The case remained unsolved, leaving his family and the community searching for answers.
After nearly eight years of uncertainty, a breakthrough occurred in the investigation. In April 2024, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office announced that a grand jury had indicted Edward Lee Tucker for the murder of Shahriar Zolfaghari. The motive is now believed to have been robbery. The indictment brought a sense of relief and hope for justice to Zolfaghari's family, who had endured a long and painful wait for this development.
