In the early morning hours of June 26, 2024, the life of 27-year-old Cody McDonald, a White/Caucasian male, was cut short in his Summerville, South Carolina, home. Responding to a call about a shooting at approximately 3 a.m., deputies from the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office arrived at the Cone Lane residence to a grim scene. They discovered Cody on the front porch, suffering from a single gunshot wound to his neck.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the deputies, who administered chest compressions until emergency medical services arrived, Cody was pronounced dead at 4:20 a.m.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a tragic family conflict that had escalated to a fatal conclusion. Prior to the gunshot, Cody had been involved in a physical altercation with his own father, Ronald McDonald. In the heat of their confrontation, Ronald retrieved a shotgun from inside the house and fired the single, fatal shot that struck his son.
When law enforcement arrived, they detained Ronald McDonald, who was reportedly combative with the authorities. A search of the home uncovered significant blood evidence and a wooden-handled rifle. After a thorough review of the case in consultation with the First Circuit Solicitor's Office, a significant legal conclusion was reached. Investigators determined that Ronald McDonald had acted in self-defense during the altercation with his son.
As a result of this determination, no charges were filed against Ronald McDonald in direct relation to Cody's death. However, the investigation brought another serious issue to light. Ronald McDonald was a convicted felon, and as such, he was legally prohibited from owning or possessing any firearms. Consequently, he was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was subsequently booked into the Dorchester County Detention Center.
