In March of 2023, the life of 32-year-old Curtis Maurice Vaughn, a Black/African American male from Oxford, Mississippi, was tragically cut short. His family last had contact with him around 11 p.m. on March 20th and reported him missing the following day. The search for Vaughn ended grimly on the afternoon of March 22, 2023, when his body was discovered near the Water Valley Municipal Airport in Yalobusha County.
Vaughn’s body was found approximately 30 feet from the centerline of
County Road 214, leading investigators to believe he was killed at a different location and his body was left on the rural road. He was the apparent victim of gunshot wounds. While his body was found in Yalobusha County, his car was located in the town of Paris, within Lafayette County. This has prompted a multi-agency investigation involving the Yalobusha County Sheriff's Department, the Oxford Police Department, the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department, and the Lafayette County Metro Narcotic Unit.
Despite the ongoing investigation, there has been little information released about the circumstances surrounding Vaughn's death. As of late 2024, no arrests have been made in connection with the homicide, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Law enforcement officials have continued to appeal to the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the case. Curtis Maurice Vaughn was remembered by his family as a loving father who was passionate about boxing and football. He had played football for the Oxford High School Chargers and was a former employee of the Walmart Distribution Center in New Albany.
