In the fall of 2016, a promising life was cut short in Southwest Atlanta. On the morning of September 16, police were called to a home on Richland Road where they discovered 28-year-old Henry Horton, a popular hairstylist, deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. For years, the case remained a painful mystery for his family, who were left to wonder who would have taken the life of a man described as outgoing and the life of the party.
Horton ran a hair salon out of his home, the very place where his life was tragically ended.
The investigation into Horton's death was extensive, and for five years, there were no public answers. Then, in October 2021, a breakthrough came. Atlanta Police homicide investigators identified a suspect and secured arrest warrants for murder, burglary, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The suspect was identified as 28-year-old Shavoz Seals. When authorities attempted to apprehend him in Sandy Springs, a police pursuit ensued. The chase ended when a Georgia State Patrol trooper performed a PIT maneuver, causing Seals' vehicle to crash. Before he could be taken into custody, Seals died by suicide from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The resolution of the case brought a complex mix of emotions for Horton's family. They expressed gratitude that the person believed to be responsible for his death had been found, finally providing an answer to their years of questioning. However, the suspect's death meant they would never have the opportunity to face him in court and learn the motive behind the senseless act of violence. While they may never have complete closure, the identification of a suspect brought a measure of solace to a family that had waited five long years for any semblance of justice.
