On September 19, 2023, the body of 29-year-old Dan Belton was discovered in Richland Creek near Old Highway 49 east in Rankin County, Mississippi. Authorities found Belton's body with multiple gunshot wounds, indicating a violent death.

Although Belton's body was found in Rankin County, investigators believe the murder actually took place in Jackson. This discovery led to a multi-jurisdictional investigation involving both Rankin County and Jackson law enforcement agencies.
