On November 17, 2023, 53-year-old Garnet Matthew West was fatally shot in Marietta, Mississippi. The Prentiss County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.

Subsequently, a Prentiss County man was charged with capital murder in connection with the shooting. The suspect was taken into custody and is awaiting trial.
