In the early morning hours of May 15, 2024, the body of 29-year-old Melvin McNair Jr., a Black male, was discovered by a park ranger at Parham Bridges Park in Jackson, Mississippi. McNair had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was found in a pool of blood by a person who had arrived to play tennis. Investigators determined that McNair's maroon 2016 GMC Sierra pickup truck had been stolen.
Later that same day, police located the stolen vehicle, leading to a chase that ended when the
suspect crashed the truck. The driver, 19-year-old Daveon Lindsey, was taken into custody. Upon his arrest, Lindsey reportedly had McNair's blood on him and was in possession of the victim's credit cards. Authorities also recovered the alleged murder weapon, a pink assault rifle.
Following his arrest, police stated that Lindsey confessed to shooting McNair multiple times, dragging him out of his truck, and stealing his vehicle and wallet. Lindsey was subsequently charged with capital murder, armed carjacking, shooting into an occupied vehicle, and fleeing an officer. He was denied bond for the capital murder charge during his initial court appearance. While a motive for the shooting has not been released, the community mourned McNair, who was remembered by loved ones as a friendly and loving person. A memorial service was held at the park where his life was tragically cut short.
