In a tragic turn of events on June 26, 2023, 16-year-old Dallas M. Williams, a male from Ypsilanti, Michigan, lost his life to gun violence. The incident, a quadruple shooting, also claimed the life of 20-year-old Tyrese Burks and left two of Williams's brothers, ages 14 and 19, seriously injured.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 800 block of George Place in Ypsilanti Township. Reports suggest that a fight may have precipitated the violence that shattered a summer evening and left a community in mourning. Neighbors reported hearing approximately five gunshots.
In the days following the shooting, the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office worked tirelessly to identify the person responsible. Their investigation, with assistance from the community, led them to a 19-year-old Ypsilanti man, Tamar Louis Lorenzo Young. Young was apprehended on June 29 by the U.S. Marshal's Detroit Fugitive Apprehension Team. Officials stated that the suspect had a history of weapons offenses.
While the two injured brothers survived the ordeal, the loss of Dallas M. Williams and Tyrese Burks left a profound impact on their families and the Ypsilanti community, which came together to honor the young victims.
