On a tragic evening in Sturgis, Michigan, the life of 38-year-old Stacy Mae Ramsey was violently cut short. On August 5, 2023, at approximately 10:43 PM, police responded to reports of a woman who had possibly been shot and then struck by a vehicle near the intersection of South Centreville Road and South Street. Arriving officers discovered Ramsey in the roadway with an apparent gunshot wound.
Witnesses at the scene recounted a horrific sequence of events.
They reported hearing gunshots and seeing a female lying in the street. As bystanders rushed to offer aid to Ramsey, the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old David Keith Algarin Jr. of Sturgis, returned to the scene. In a final, brutal act, he struck Ramsey with his vehicle before fleeing. Emergency services transported her to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, but she succumbed to her injuries while en route.
The investigation into Ramsey's death quickly led law enforcement to a second gruesome discovery. At the Sweet Lake Mobile Home Park on US-12, officers found the body of 61-year-old Jerry Odell Longacre, another victim of Algarin's violent spree. With a double homicide investigation now underway, a manhunt for Algarin was initiated.
The following morning, on August 6, 2023, police located Algarin, which resulted in a high-speed pursuit. The chase ended when officers executed a PIT maneuver, forcing Algarin's vehicle into a field. During the ensuing confrontation, law enforcement officers shot and killed Algarin. It was later reported that during the pursuit, Algarin had been in communication with dispatch and had expressed both suicidal and homicidal thoughts. While the immediate threat was neutralized, the motive behind the tragic and senseless killings of Stacy Ramsey and Jerry Longacre remains unclear to investigators.
