Oghenevwede “Wede” Okagbare, a 20-year-old male, was a promising computer science student at Michigan State University. His life was tragically cut short on August 11, 2023, in a fatal shooting that occurred at a residence on the 400 block of West Street in Howell, Michigan. At the time of the incident, Okagbare was visiting his girlfriend's home.
The Howell Police Department described the event as a 'tragic and senseless shooting death'.
Law enforcement officials quickly identified a suspect, Reese Hammie. Hammie, who was 22 years old at the time of the incident, was apprehended on the same day as the shooting. He was initially held on charges unrelated to the shooting that stemmed from prior incidents. Subsequently, he was charged with open murder and witness intimidation in connection with Okagbare's death.
Reese Hammie faced a jury trial for the shooting of Oghenevwede Okagbare. After an eleven-day trial, the jury deliberated for approximately two and a half hours before reaching a verdict on November 18, 2025. Hammie was found guilty of first-degree murder and obstruction of justice. In a separate but related case for offenses committed on the same day, he was also convicted of home invasion and domestic violence. He is scheduled to be sentenced for the murder of Oghenevwede Okagbare on January 9, 2026.
