In a tragic turn of events, a case of mistaken identity led to the death of 78-year-old Nora Luna in her Jackson, Michigan home. On the night of January 29, 2024, Luna was resting on her couch when she was struck by a bullet in the head. She was quickly transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries the following day.
Authorities swiftly apprehended a suspect, 19-year-old Arion Wagner, within an hour of the shooting. The investigation revealed a harrowing story of misplaced vengeance. Earlier that day, Wagner's mother's house had been shot at. Believing he knew who was responsible, Wagner allegedly set out for retaliation. He had been told that the perpetrator's house had red curtains. In a fatal error, he mistook Luna's residence for his intended target and opened fire from a vehicle. It was later determined that neither Nora Luna nor anyone in her home had any connection to the initial shooting or to Wagner.
Arion Wagner has since been charged with open murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle causing death, and other felony firearm offenses. In addition to the charges related to Luna's death, he also faces accusations of domestic violence and assault with intent to do great bodily harm by strangulation involving his pregnant girlfriend. During a preliminary hearing, his girlfriend testified that he had forced her to drive him to Luna's house and that he fired the weapon. She also detailed alleged instances of abuse that occurred earlier on the day of the shooting. The case against Wagner is proceeding through the Jackson County court system.
