In the early evening of February 26, 2023, a burst of gunfire shattered the quiet of the Sinclair Gate apartment complex in Northeast Baltimore. When the chaos subsided, 21-year-old Mason Kelly, a Black male, was found unresponsive in the second-floor vestibule of a building on the 5500 block of Bowley's Lane. He had been fatally shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other young men, aged 18 and 19, were also wounded in the triple shooting but survived.
The investigation into the shooting revealed a chilling sequence of events captured on surveillance footage. Two vehicles were seen pulling over on a nearby street before four individuals dressed in black ran towards the apartment complex's parking lot. An officer in an unmarked car for crime suppression duties heard the gunshots and immediately responded, finding multiple people running from the area. The community was shaken by the violence, particularly as it was the second multiple-victim shooting at the same apartment complex in a matter of months. Those who knew Mason Kelly remembered him as a young father.
The investigation led police to identify Jared Ford, then 21, as a suspect in what was described as a nearly week-long crime spree that included the murder of Mason Kelly and three other non-fatal shootings. Ballistic evidence played a crucial role in connecting Ford to the crimes;. 40 caliber casings recovered from the scene of Kelly's murder matched those from another shooting that occurred on March 2, 2023.
In July 2024, Jared Ford was convicted by a jury on charges of First Degree Murder for the death of Mason Kelly, along with two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, First Degree Assault, Conspiracy to Commit First Degree Murder, and numerous firearm offenses. During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence that included a phone call Ford made to his girlfriend after his arrest, in which he asked her to move something from their house and warned her not to 'snitch'. In October 2024, Ford was sentenced to two life sentences plus 190 years in prison, with the first 25 years ineligible for parole.
