In the early morning hours of August 31, 2023, the life of Eric Lamont Gill, a 56-year-old Black / African American male from Baltimore, Maryland, was tragically cut short. Police responded to a call at approximately 6:21 a.m. in the 6100 block of Edlynne Road, where they discovered Gill lying in the street with apparent gunshot wounds. Medical personnel arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead.
An investigation into the homicide was launched by the Baltimore Police Department.
Nearly three weeks later, on September 19, 2023, authorities announced an arrest in connection with the fatal shooting. Kyle Cooper, a 32-year-old man from Baltimore, was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder.
According to charging documents, the events leading to Gill's death began with an alleged attempt by Gill and an associate to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle. When that attempt was unsuccessful, they reportedly abandoned their own disabled vehicle and then proceeded to steal a pickup truck belonging to Kyle Cooper.
Investigators believe that Cooper discovered his truck was being stolen and gave chase. He allegedly followed the stolen truck in another vehicle. Audio and video evidence recovered by police reportedly captured a male voice yelling, "Get the *** out of the car, get out, get out, get out," immediately followed by the sound of multiple gunshots. Following his arrest, Kyle Cooper was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility.
