In the early morning hours of Labor Day, September 4, 2023, the life of 27-year-old Caryn Faye Brown was tragically cut short in Federalsburg, Maryland. Officers from the Federalsburg Police Department responded to a call shortly after midnight and discovered Brown lying in the grass in front of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Gardens Court.
She had sustained apparent gunshot wounds, and despite the quick response of emergency medical services from Caroline County, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Brown, a mother of four, had recently taken steps to distance herself from a volatile four-year relationship with Quandre Lee Winder, the 26-year-old father of her two younger children. According to a GoFundMe campaign set up by her family, she had 'escaped the terror' of this relationship and was beginning to feel like herself again. Investigators believe that Brown and Winder were involved in an ongoing relationship and had an altercation at the time of the murder. Just two weeks prior, on August 20th, police had been called regarding a disagreement between the two, though no injuries were reported at that time.
The investigation into Brown's death quickly pointed to Winder as the primary suspect. A coordinated effort between the Maryland State Apprehension Team and the Delaware State Police led to his arrest at a residence in Seaford, Delaware, on the morning of September 4th. Winder, who has no fixed address, was taken into custody without incident. He has since been charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other gun-related offenses. Following his arrest, Winder was held in Delaware, awaiting extradition back to Maryland to face the charges against him. The investigation, led by the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, is ongoing, and authorities have urged anyone with relevant information to come forward.
