Monte Edmond was a curious and intellectual young man who loved to understand how the world worked. His mother, Lashon Luellen, recalled a conversation with him about science and the ocean, one of his favorite topics, as a moment when she saw him as his own person. The 17-year-old Black/African American male attended the Barack Obama School of Career and Technical Education in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was a fan of basketball and the Milwaukee Bucks.
His mother described him as an amazing individual with a great personality that touched everyone around him.
On the afternoon of October 26, 2024, Monte’s life was cut short by gunfire. The shooting happened around 4:40 p.m. inside a residence near North 18th Street and West Capitol Drive. According to the medical examiner's report, Monte was in the living room of the home when he sustained fatal injuries.
The day after the shooting, on Sunday, October 27, heartbroken family, friends, and classmates gathered on North 18th Street for a vigil to remember Monte. His mother spoke to the crowd, sharing that her son was meant to do great things and should not have been gone at 17. She pleaded for an end to youth gun violence, urging young people to be more self-aware and to think critically about their actions.
Milwaukee police investigated the homicide and took a 20-year-old man into custody in connection with the shooting. In October 2024, charges against the suspect were referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for review. The case is currently in litigation.
