In the early morning hours of July 30, 2023, Terrence McElwee, a 31-year-old male, was fatally shot in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 169 near 31st Street. McElwee was the passenger in a vehicle that was disabled on the highway when police arrived to find him deceased at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head.
The male driver of the car had also been shot but was expected to survive his injuries.
Investigators believe that the shooting was not a random act of violence. McElwee and the driver had just left an after-hours establishment known as Tha Kickback Club. It is believed that another vehicle pulled up alongside their car on the highway, and an occupant of that vehicle opened fire, striking both men multiple times. Authorities have suggested that the motive for the shooting may have originated from a dispute in Muskogee, possibly involving gang members, that carried over into Tulsa.
As of August 2024, the murder of Terrence McElwee remains unsolved. Tulsa Police homicide investigators have indicated that while they have received information and have a general understanding of the events that transpired, they lack the necessary evidence to move forward with an arrest. Law enforcement has publicly appealed for assistance, urging anyone who was at Tha Kickback Club on the night of the shooting and may have photographs or videos to come forward. Despite having a high solve rate for homicides, this case remains one of two from that period that are still open, with authorities continuing to seek the public's help in bringing those responsible to justice.
