Anthony Porter, a 44-year-old Black/African American man, was killed in the early morning hours of February 20, 2024, inside a room at the Days Inn at 8217 S. I-35 Service Road in southeast Oklahoma City. At approximately 5:24 a.m., Oklahoma City police officers were dispatched to the motel after receiving a report that someone had been shot. When officers entered the room, they found Porter deceased from an apparent gunshot wound.
Police subsequently classified the case as Oklahoma City’s eighth homicide of 2024.
Investigators moved quickly after the shooting. By later that same day, detectives had identified Brandon Metcalf as someone allegedly involved in Porter’s death and arrested him on a murder complaint. Metcalf was booked into the Oklahoma County Detention Center, and a warrant was issued with bond set at $10 million. Police publicly announced the arrest the following day after Porter’s family had been notified of his death.
Additional information later reported from the murder-warrant investigation described a confrontation that allegedly developed during a firearms transaction inside the motel room. According to a witness interviewed by investigators, Porter had been attempting to sell a firearm to Metcalf and another individual when a fight began. The witness said Porter dropped his gun during the struggle and that Metcalf picked it up. She then heard a single gunshot, although she reportedly could not determine who actually fired the weapon. The available accounts therefore did not establish from her observation alone which person discharged the fatal shot.
The witness also told investigators that the second person accompanying Metcalf pointed a firearm at her after the shooting and ordered her to pack her belongings and leave. According to the account attributed to her in the warrant, she was threatened with death if she told anyone what had happened. Police later identified that second person as a 15-year-old and took the teenager into custody in connection with the investigation. Because the second suspect was a juvenile, the individual’s name was not publicly released in the reports located for this case.
At the time of the teenager’s arrest, the Oklahoma County District Attorney’s Office reportedly had not yet been presented with the juvenile’s case, and prosecutors had therefore made no public decision about whether the teenager would face proceedings as a juvenile or be prosecuted as an adult. Reports also stated that Metcalf had been released from federal prison approximately a week before Porter was killed and was wanted on a federal parole-related warrant when he was arrested in connection with the homicide investigation.
Publicly available Oklahoma records later show that a Brandon Metcalf in Oklahoma County case CF-2024-0959 was sentenced on January 7, 2025, to five years for a convicted-felon firearm offense. Oklahoma Pardon and Parole Board records show that parole was denied in November 2025 and listed a projected release date of October 30, 2026. The publicly accessible material located for this synopsis, however, does not establish that Metcalf was ultimately convicted of Porter's homicide, nor does it document a murder trial or murder conviction arising from Porter's death. Accordingly, the initial murder arrest and the later firearm conviction should not be treated as evidence that a court found Metcalf guilty of killing Porter.
The investigation began with Porter found shot to death in a motel room and expanded within days to two arrests, allegations surrounding a gun transaction, and a witness account describing both a struggle and threats made immediately afterward.
