On March 30, 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley embarked on a journey from Hugoton, Kansas, that they would never complete. Their destination was a pre-arranged location in the Oklahoma panhandle where Veronica was to pick up her two children for a birthday party. Jilian, a friend and court-appointed supervisor, accompanied her due to a contentious custody dispute with the children's paternal grandmother.
