In the summer of 2024, the life of Kayden Michael Cook, a 24-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically cut short in Duncan, Oklahoma. On the evening of July 19th, events unfolded at the Magnolia Manor Apartments on Country Club Road that would end in his untimely death. An altercation broke out, and during the fight, a single gunshot fatally wounded Kayden in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:44 p.m.
The investigation into the shooting was swiftly taken over by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a move prompted by the tribal affiliations of both Kayden and the individual identified as the shooter. Witnesses at the apartment complex identified Jesse Wayne James Keenan as the person who fired the weapon. Following his detainment, Keenan waived his Miranda rights and provided his account of the incident to law enforcement. He stated that a fight had preceded the shooting and that he had fled the scene afterward, discarding the gun near some bushes. Authorities later recovered the weapon and discovered its serial number had been scratched off.
Jesse Wayne James Keenan was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and first-degree manslaughter. According to court filings, an argument between Keenan and his girlfriend had occurred prior to his arrival at the apartment complex where the deadly encounter took place. The case was handled in federal court due to Keenan's membership in the Choctaw Nation and the crime's location within the boundaries of the Chickasaw Nation. Keenan later pleaded guilty to the charges brought against him.
