On the evening of May 5, 2023, a sense of normalcy in a Wapato, Washington neighborhood was shattered by sudden violence. Charlie Jimenez, a 35-year-old man, was standing in the front yard of a residence on Wasco Avenue when the sharp report of gunfire echoed through the street. Two vehicles had pulled up, and from within them, a barrage of shots was fired directly at Jimenez, striking him multiple times in the leg, abdomen, and chest.
The vehicles then sped away, leaving a scene of chaos and a life hanging in the balance.
A neighbor, hearing the gunshots and witnessing the immediate aftermath, quickly called 911 to report the shooting and that their neighbor had been gravely injured. In a desperate attempt to save his life, Jimenez was rushed from the scene in a private vehicle, but his injuries proved too severe, and he succumbed to them while en route to the hospital. The quiet residential street was now the center of a homicide investigation, as officers from the Wapato Police Department and detectives from the Yakima County Sheriff's Office began to piece together the events of that fatal night.
The investigation quickly gained momentum as detectives canvassed the neighborhood and discovered security footage that captured the two suspect vehicles involved in the brazen attack. A short time after the shooting, a Toppenish Police Officer spotted one of the vehicles, initiating a pursuit that ended when the driver lost control and crashed near Buena. Three occupants fled the wrecked vehicle on foot but were soon apprehended by law enforcement.
Following the initial arrests, the investigation led to formal charges against two of the individuals. Joel Campos-Dones, 20, of Toppenish and Xavier Randall, 19, of Granger were each charged with second-degree murder and drive-by shooting. They were subsequently booked into the Yakima County Jail, with their bail set at one million dollars each. A third individual who was taken into custody was later released. Authorities have indicated that the investigation remains active, as they continue to search for the second vehicle and any other individuals who may have been involved in the shooting death of Charlie Jimenez. The motive behind the killing has not been publicly released by law enforcement.
