On the night of August 5, 2023, Michael M. Lefeau, a 41-year-old male, was fatally shot in the parking lot of the Concordia Arms apartment complex in Parkland, a suburb of Tacoma, Washington. Lefeau was visiting a friend at the complex when the incident occurred. Deputies from the Pierce County Sheriff's Department responded to a shooting report at 10:04 p.m. and found Lefeau with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries around 11:45 p.m.
His death was officially ruled a homicide.
The investigation into Lefeau's murder led authorities to identify 49-year-old Shaun Luzama as the primary suspect. According to charging documents, Luzama and another man had driven to the apartment complex with the intention of confronting a tenant over a dispute involving a stolen Lexus. Lefeau was with this tenant when Luzama and his associate arrived. Witnesses reported seeing Luzama shoot Lefeau, though the exact reason why Lefeau was targeted remains unclear. The tenant told detectives that he had found a sawed-off shotgun in Lefeau's pants after the shooting. A warrant was issued for Luzama's arrest on September 27, charging him with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm.
More than a month after the shooting, on November 17, 2023, law enforcement tracked Luzama to a residence in Bremerton. A lengthy standoff ensued, during which Luzama, who was armed, fired at officers. The confrontation ended when officers shot and killed Luzama. A 47-year-old woman was also killed during the shootout, though her connection to Luzama was not immediately clear. Following the death of the suspect, Lefeau's family expressed a sense of relief that they had answers, though they had hoped to face him in court. His family remembered him as a loving father and a skilled cook, particularly known for his Thanksgiving preparations.
