In the late hours of August 15, 2023, the life of Shawn Joyner, a 45-year-old Black / African American man, was tragically cut short in Tacoma, Washington. Just after midnight, in the 1400 block of Ernest K. Brazil Street, Joyner was shot multiple times. When Tacoma police officers arrived at the scene, they found him with critical injuries and immediately began to render aid. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Pierce County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed that Joyner's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
Known affectionately by his friends as "Spida," Shawn Joyner was remembered as a fiercely loyal friend with a great sense of humor who smiled and laughed often. He had a varied work history, having been employed as a logger and a hot tub repair technician. His sudden and violent death left his family and friends to grapple with the unexpected loss of a man described as having a fun-loving and calming demeanor.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement conducted a search of the area and located a 19-year-old male who was taken into custody on suspicion of murder and booked into the Pierce County Jail. This individual had a prior criminal history, including an incident a couple of months earlier involving the discharge of a firearm in a park.
However, as of late August 2023, prosecutors had not yet formally charged the 19-year-old suspect in connection with Shawn Joyner's death. The case was pending further investigation, and the suspect was awaiting a competency hearing while being held in custody on a separate matter. There have been no subsequent public announcements regarding the outcome of this hearing or if murder charges were ultimately filed against the individual who was arrested. The investigation into the death of Shawn Joyner remains a painful and unresolved chapter for his loved ones.
