In the quiet Maple Leaf Mobile Home Park in Blaine, Washington, the afternoon of October 4, 2023, was shattered by a single shotgun blast. Vincent Reames, a 67-year-old male resident, was shot and killed in his own driveway. When Whatcom County Sheriff's deputies arrived around 4 p.m., they found Reames lying unresponsive on the ground. Despite their attempts at CPR, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The man who had fired the fatal shot, his 76-year-old neighbor Wayne Harold Mahar Sr., was seen on his porch holding the shotgun.
Mahar was taken into custody without incident, and the investigation into Reames' death quickly uncovered a history of conflict between the two men. Since November 2021, deputies had responded to at least four disputes between them, none of which had previously resulted in criminal charges. Mahar had made a noise complaint against Reames in November 2022, during which he allegedly told a deputy that he "wished he could just kill" him. The day before the shooting, Mahar reportedly told another neighbor that he was going to kill Reames. In an interview with detectives following his arrest, Mahar claimed Reames deserved to be dead, though he was unable to provide specifics of any threats made against him by the victim. Mahar was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder and held on $2 million bail. However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn when jail officials noted that Mahar was experiencing memory issues. He was sent to Western State Hospital for a competency evaluation. In April 2024, doctors determined that Mahar was incompetent to stand trial and that his condition was unlikely to improve with treatment. As a result, the first-degree murder charge against Wayne Harold Mahar Sr. was dismissed, bringing a complex and tragic end to the case of Vincent Reames' death.
