On the evening of November 6, 2023, the small coastal community of Moclips, Washington, was disturbed by an act of violence that resulted in the death of 42-year-old Steve McMahon. A male resident of the town, McMahon was fatally shot during an incident that authorities would later describe as an armed robbery. The Grays Harbor Sheriff's Office was alerted to the shooting and immediately launched an investigation into the homicide.
In the initial hours, law enforcement canvassed the area, seeking to identify and locate the person or persons responsible, who had fled the scene.
The investigation, with assistance from the Hoquiam and Ocean Shores police departments, progressed swiftly. Within days, authorities had made several arrests, reassuring the public that the crime was not a random act and that there was no ongoing danger to the community. Investigators stated that the individuals taken into custody were believed to have had a personal connection to McMahon. Four North County residents were ultimately arrested in connection with the murder and robbery.
The subsequent legal proceedings brought clarity and resolution to the case. Levi B. Lemieux-Taylor was identified as the shooter and, following a jury trial, was found guilty of first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, theft of a firearm, and tampering with physical evidence. He was sentenced to a total of 25 years in prison. Three other individuals were also convicted for their roles in the crime. Sean S. Ellefson and Teresa C. Bushman both pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, receiving sentences of 240 months and 180 months, respectively. A fourth person, Robert L. Cannon, pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to 84 months in prison, concluding the prosecution of all individuals involved in McMahon's death.
