On a summer evening in Spokane, Washington, the life of 27-year-old Anthony "Tony" Brown, a White male, was tragically cut short. On June 25, 2024, Brown, a father, went with a group of friends to check on an acquaintance's apartment at the Serrano South apartments on East Wedgewood Avenue in North Spokane, as the tenant was out of town. Upon their arrival, they discovered that the apartment was occupied.
Brown knocked on the door and instructed the individuals inside to leave.
What began as a request to vacate the premises quickly escalated into a fatal confrontation. The apartment door flew open, and in the ensuing moments, two or three gunshots rang out. Witnesses reported seeing a man and a woman flee the apartment immediately after the shots were fired. Bystanders rushed to Brown's aid, attempting to stop the bleeding from his gunshot wounds, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Spokane County Medical Examiner later confirmed that Anthony Brown's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the shooting led Spokane police to identify 23-year-old Wyatt F. Comer as the primary suspect. Investigators found Comer's backpack and an ID belonging to his associate and possible girlfriend, Johnvani Andrews, inside the apartment. Family members informed the police that Comer had confessed to shooting someone. He had also allegedly asked a friend for assistance in retrieving a gun he had discarded in a dumpster, a request that was refused. Police tracked Comer's vehicle and arrested him on June 27, 2024, on suspicion of second-degree murder. Andrews was also taken into custody on an unrelated warrant.
Wyatt F. Comer, who has multiple prior felony convictions in Spokane County, was initially charged with murder. However, in a plea agreement, he pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter. In September 2025, a Spokane County Superior Court judge sentenced Comer to six and a half years in prison for the shooting death of Anthony Brown. He will receive credit for the time he served in jail since his arrest in June 2024. Following his release, Comer will be on probation for 18 years.
